General Dentistry

Visiting the dentist regularly will not only help keep your teeth and mouth healthy but will also help keep the rest of your body healthy.

What Exactly Is
General Dentistry?

Dentistry is a branch of medicine concerned with oral health: the diagnosis, treatment, and prevention of diseases, conditions, and disorders of the teeth, gums, mouth, and jaws. Oral health has an impact on a patient’s general health, affecting disorders such as heart disease and diabetes.

Dentists are medical specialists who have completed at least eight years of schooling, and received either a DDS (doctor of dental surgery) degree, or a DMD (doctor of dental medicine) degree.  Much like doctors, dentists can undertake additional, post graduate, study in various specialties. These specialties include:

  • Pedodontics (dental needs of children)
  • Endodontics (root canals)
  • Oral and maxillofacial surgery(including pathology, radiology, and surgery)
  • Orthodontics
  • Periodontics (gum disease)
  • Prosthodontics (crowns and dentures)

Visiting the dentist regularly will not only help keep your teeth and mouth healthy, but will also help keep the rest of your body healthy.  Regular dental care is important because it:

  • Helps keep teeth looking bright and beautiful by removing stains caused by food, drinks, and tobacco
  • Prevents or treats bad breath – brushing, flossing, and seeing the dentist regularly will help reduce the amount of bad-breath causing bacteria in your mouth, bad breath can also be caused by active infections in the mouth
  • Treats tooth decay before it progresses to a painful infection or completely prevents tooth decay
  • Treats or prevents periodontal (gum) disease, which can lead to bone and tooth loss, and affects heart health
  • Strengthens your teeth so that you can enjoy healthy, beautiful smiles for the rest of your life!

Your teeth may not hurt, but it’s still very important to visit the dentist regularly. Problems can exist without your knowing, and by the time you’re in pain, the problem is much bigger! Your dentist’s first concern is your health, but your smile’s appearance is also important and can affect your self-confidence  Your dentist can help you keep your smile healthy and looking beautiful. You don’t have to settle for stained, chipped, missing, or misshapen teeth. Treatment options that can maintain your beautiful smile or improve it include:

  • Professional teeth whitening
  • Tooth colored fillings
  • Veneers and crowns
  • Implants and full smile makeovers

Most people should see their dentist at least once every six months for a regular checkup/professional cleaning. Patients who are at a greater risk for gum disease or other problems may need to see the dentist more than twice a year. Your dentist and dental hygienist will help you determine how often you should be seen.
